Leadership for Learning

For Vice Principals, Supervisory Staff, and Teacher-Leaders

Based on CEBE’s highly successful Federal School Leadership Program (2002-2005), the Leadership for Learning program is a nine month, clearly focused experience, designed not only to support participants in their current leadership roles, but also to prepare them for forthcoming roles, especially the principalship. Normally, participants join the initiative as a member of a team of four, eight, or twelve people from a school district.

The program is grounded in the Leadership for Learning Principles and is focused on the leadership of teaching and learning. The initiative gives explicit attention to the priorities and practices that underpin improving learning in classrooms.

Within a framework of Leadership in Learning (Instructional Leadership), Personal Leadership, Community Leadership, and Systems Leadership, the initiative incorporates: a Focus on Learning (Content-Focused Coaching, Exploring Students’ Work, Lesson Study); Brokering and Sustaining Change (Becoming Evidence-Wise, School Self-Evaluation, Leading Teams); Building Human and Social Capital (Building Communities of Practice, 360° Feedback, Working through Conflict), and Thinking and Acting Systemically (Accountability Dialogues, Community Engagement, Systems Dynamics).

Participants will engage in continuing reflection on the work in which they are engaged, and on the detail of the strategies and practices most likely to support them in their everyday challenges. In particular, they will develop their capacities in: (i) supporting teachers to enhance and enrich their classroom practices; (ii) supporting students to engage in work that will increase their capacity to meet demanding standards; (iii) supporting all colleagues to draw upon multiple sources of evidence/data not only to advance their practice but also to eliminate the achievement gap.

The structure of the Leadership for Learning program engages participants in four three day retreats, six in-district workshops, three in-school coaching sessions, and three online learning forums.
