Leading Teams, Leading Transformation (LT)²: Tomorrow's Schools... Today

Introduction and Rationale

Leading Teams, Leading Transformation (LT)² is an
evidence-based, action-centered and outcomes-focused process to improve and sustain school and student performance. (LT)² recognizes the urgency for schools in challenging circumstances to achieve immediate improvement. It also recognizes the
critical importance of embedding practices that sustain high performance over time.

Developed as a result of a study conducted by the Center for Evidence-Based Education, and funded by the U.S. Department of Education, (LT)² is a three-year initiative which:

  • provides schools in challenging circumstances with on-site consulting services, a school-specific action plan, individual and team-based coaching, and customized strategies to improve student progress and achievement
  • develops the capacity of leadership teams to transform teaching and learning and to sustain improved student progress and performance
  • utilizes an evidence-based suite of tools to support and benchmark school and student progress and achievement

(LT)² recognizes that teams, rather than individuals working alone, are more effective in reaching the goals of improving school and student outcomes. It is based on an explicit understanding that effective teams need to be systematically developed and sustained to reach and maintain full capacity to achieve success.

(LT)² focuses on what effective leaders and leadership teams actually do in real school and district settings. It guides them in improving their own performance as well as in improving the progress and achievement of their students and their school. The initiative is grounded in the Leadership for Learning Principles that underpin CEBE’s leadership work.

The Process

The (LT)² initiative enables leadership teams to draw upon, make sense of, and use a wide range of evidence in developing an action plan to improve student progress and achievement, for example, in responding to a No Child Left Behind (NCLB) review: [New Jersey – Collaborative Assessment and Planning for Achievement (CAPA) Review; New York – School Under Registration Review (SURR)].

(LT)² is customized to respond to the individual context and unique requirements of each school. It provides a framework for organizing existing demands on the school and builds the capacity to meet them.

The (LT)² initiative is in four stages: Agreeing an Action Plan; Acting on the Plan; Evaluating Progress and Refining the Action Plan;
Embedding Practices that Sustain Achievement and Accountability.

Coaching provides ongoing support for strengthening existing capacity and developing new capacity, both for
individuals and teams. Regular on-site work sessions complement the coaching, providing focused opportunities
for the development of classroom and school-wide practice. Integrated evaluation strategies provide continuous
feedback on progress.

Specific strategies are available for use in each stage as part of the (LT)² Evidence-Based Suite of Tools.

Delivery

The (LT)² initiative is delivered through an integrated approach that includes:

  • individual and team coaching
  • on-site work sessions
  • just-in-time online support
  • residential retreats
  • mapping and managing learning
  • classroom assessment practices and strategies
  • evidence-based decision making
  • the (LT)² evidence-based suite of tools

It is led and managed by experienced educators with an especially broad range of field experience, content expertise, and organizational knowledge.

Outcomes

The (LT)² initiative:

  • improves student progress and achievement
  • transforms practice
  • builds the capacity of individuals and teams to develop, deliver, and sustain an action plan for improved student achievement

As a result of their participation in the initiative, schools develop as self-sustaining communities of practice in which accountability for high performance is shared at all levels.
